Lincoln Rock - SATURDAY

Another 5:30 wakeup call and another long stroll with Grandad. But when we were all up and ready, Miss Daisy helped Gran make breakfast.

After a morning nap, we headed over to watch the annual softball game. Daisy enjoyed watching and eating grapes, and then meeting all kinds of new people and dogs.

At one point Daisy spotted a big beach ball and really wanted to play with it. But the ball belonged to two-year-old Paige, who was definitely NOT into sharing. I was pretty impressed at how Daisy handled the situation by not choosing to freak out herself. And then later, Paige went on a walk, so she got to enjoy the ball after all!

That afternoon we took a walk to the beach to get some shaved ice. Yummy. There's Linda with her small and me with my medium. Yeah, I was a little ambitious. But I wanted to be sure I had enough to share with a certain little person.

But Darin's Uncle John shared some of his first:

Then we headed to the beach. We wanted to have fun and dig in the sand rocks, but it was really chilly. So we stayed long enough to get some pictures, bury Daisy's feet in the sand rocks, and have a little bit of fun.

Dinner, Daisy to bed, and more volleyball that night (probably the best game of the trip!). Even though I was missing Darin, I was really glad we had made the trek.

Lincoln Rock - FRIDAY

Apparently Miss Daisy decided that 5:30 was a good time to get up whilst we were camping. EVERY MORNING she was up at 5:30. Exhausting. Thankfully, most mornings I was able to give her a few toys and doze a bit while she played in her porta-crib until Grandad got up and would take her (and some graham crackers) on a long walk around the park. I was so thankful for the extra sleep, and Daisy was a total angel on the walks.

Somehow, though, naptimes didn't get any longer despite the early rising!

One of my favorite things about camping with the crew at the rock is all the "young'uns" sleeping out on tarps. I guess it saves on camping sites!

Before dinner we enjoyed watching some volleyball, and I even played a little while Daisy hung with aunts or uncles:

Another fun day in the sun!

Lincoln Rock: THURSDAY

So besides the the pool pics, I realized I haven't shared much about our adventure to Lincoln rock two weeks ago. So I thought I'd do some photo and story recapping here on the ole blog, so that when I get around to scrapping these photos I'll actually remember the stories behind them!

Darin, the saint he is, helped load up the car on Wednesday night and then Daisy and I left here around 9:00 Thursday morning, right after breakfast. It didn't take Daisy too long to fall asleep (nicely planned, Miss Mama) and I had a couple hours of driving and listening to a Podiobook that turned out to be a dud. Just before Cle Elum I started to wonder if we could make it over Blewitt pass without stopping for gas. Since Daisy was asleep I didn't want to pull over and wake her, but she must have heard my thoughts because she awoke shortly thereafter. So we pulled into the Safeway for a fill up, diaper change, and walk around the store for some snacks. We loaded back into the car and I gave Daisy some snacks and toys, which miraculously kept her entertained the rest of the way through Blewitt pass, Leavenworth, Cashmere and through Wenatchee. I was so proud of her for how good she was in the car!

We pulled into the campsite around 1:00 and after lunch and cleanup I tried to put Daisy down for another nap. We were staying with Darin's mom and stepdad in their motorhome, so we set up Daisy's porta-crib for sleeping. Well, she was having none of it, and two hours later I finally tired of trying and we got up and went for a walk in the stoller. That didn't do the trick either as there are too many fun things to look at, and people stopping us to talk. So we went back to the campsite, spread out the blanket and toys, and played the rest of the afternoon away.

Lydia was great at smiling for the camera!

Daisy and Lydia made some beautiful music together.

But the graham cracker distracts her from playing for Laurie.

Graham crackers are a favorite new addition to the snack rotation.

That night, I was nervous about putting an overly-tired Daisy to bed, but she went down without a hitch. And I got to play some volleyball. That is one thing I love about Darin's family: their love of the best game ever. As the night was winding down, Dakota and I played a little two-on-two against a couple boys. Normally two-on-two just isn't my game since I'm not so good at the net, but Dakota and I played really well together and had a blast. And even with a close game, we pulled it out in the end and were pretty darn proud of ourselves!

As light faded I headed over to visit with Linda and her good friend Zoe. If you're from Washington, you may have heard about Zoe's husband who was a federal officer and was killed last year by a driver high on meth. We ended up talking a lot that evening and I must admit that it was one of the most profound experiences of my life to sit across from a woman surviving that kind of grief and get to ask her questions. She is moving forward, focusing all her energy on being a mom and a dad to her two young sons. I was so impressed by her resolve.

11:30 bedtime for me that night.

Back with Friday tomorrow!

breaking Darin's heart

A conversation in Darin's office yesterday:

Daisy: Hi.

Liberty: Oh, how cute! She just said "hi".

Daisy: Hi.

Liberty: Too cute!

Me (sensing she's ready to show off): Daisy, can you say "mama"?

Daisy: Ma-Ma.

Me: Yea! Daisy, can you say "Daisy"?

Daisy: Daaay-Zeee

Me: Yea! Daisy, can you say "Papa"?

Daisy: Bye!

I think she hears a lot of that coming from her Papa these days. But today we got to spend 3 hours together and it was heaven!

parental advice needed

DSC_0561

(Photo curtesey of Marzipan, our amazing camp photographer.)

Here we go folks. Diving into the deep end of the pool when it comes to parenting. So far it's been all about feeding, changing diapers, keeping clean and relatively safe. Teaching a few signs, figuring out what makes her laugh, and lots of time spent reading together. But I don't have a baby anymore. Even though she's not officially toddling yet, she is really a toddler. Deffiant, troublemaking, tantrum throwing toddler.

Currently we are dealing with two things that Daisy very much likes to do, and which her mother does not approve of: throwing food and standing up in the tub. I've tried the not-so-effective "no" many times. I've tried removing her from the situation and dealing with the ensuing tantrum. Yet when she's back in the tub or eating, she's back at it again.

I've got to get my hands on some good parenting information. I don't know what cause/effect understanding she has. What is an appropriate method of discipline for a 12-month old. What can she understand?

I would love to hear your parenting advice. And I would particulary love any book/website recommendations you could toss my way. I'm hoping that Darin and I can find a Love and Logic class to take together this fall or winter.

She is definitely a strong willed little one.

Mmmm...I wonder where she gets that from?!

5 years

Happy Anniversary Baby! Can you believe it? These years have certainly taken us on some wild adventures together. But God has been faithful, and you have been faithful, and I wouldn't trade our time together for anything.

5 years has taken us from this:

...to this:

I can't wait to see what the next 5 brings!

dining at the chuckwagon

Back in Bellingham at our farwell reception at Northlake a few of my mom-friends were counseling me about my move to full time mommyness. Be careful to commit to too much, they warned. Your schedule will fill up quicker than you realize.

"Yes," I nodded. "That's really true. But there is one thing that fills a mom's time that I won't have to do as much."

"What's that?" they asked eagerly.

"Cook." I grinned. And then quickly explained to their jealous faces that whenever there's a group at camp staff can eat in the dining hall for free. Now, it's no gourmet fare, and it could get tiring after a while, and there is a distinct lack of fresh fruits and vegetables. But I gotta say, with a little added things at home, it sure makes our food budget go a lot futher! And I love the way packing up Daisy and walking down the hill 3 times a day helps break up our day at home.

I once thought the perk would be getting to eat as a family as well. But Darin barely sits for 10 minutes at a time before he's interrupted with this or that. And putting 160 kids and 50+ staff in a dining hall sure makes for a LOUD environment.

The room quickly goes from this:

IMG_1257

to full of loudness:

IMG_1259

Here's a little video to show you just how distracting all those kids can be to a little Daisy (especially when Papa is on the mic with announcements):

And this one is the end of the nightly skit or "walk on" as they call it here. The reaction Daisy has at the end is her usual response to the chaos: she LOVES it. (Notice Darin running through in the middle to the staff who obviously didn't get the announcement above about dancing on the chairs!)

happiness

Can't leave that sad post up for too long. So how about a new video that makes me tingly all the way down to my toes. I'm very impressed at the coordination it took to pull this off.

The dad-in-law part is the BEST.

Now Darin and I are already talking about me getting involved in a show this fall. Yipee!

struggling

I don't do well with disappointment. So I didn't do well last night when Darin was going to try to come home "early" (at 8:00) and didn't get in until after 11:00. And I'm not doing well today as we were supposed to go on a daytrip and that isn't happening either.

High school drama. Major drama. Parent drama too. Oh-vey. It's only the first week of camp!

So pray for me if you can. Pray for Darin too. Life just feels kinda stinky right now.

We're supposed to celebrate our anniversary on Saturday with a trip to the waterslides. I told Darin I'm going with or without him! :)

kiddie pool, part 2

Turns out the previous occupants of our humble abode left behind a perfectly good kiddie pool for us to use. Miss Daisy just about freaked out when we came home from camping and she saw it on our way into the house. Darin had an hour off Monday afternoon so she took a dip.

This time I took a little video to show you exactly how carefree she is in the pool.

Here's to hoping the weather gets a little warmer! She was definitely chilled when we pulled her out, but would probably have kept at it all night if we'd let her. So Papa got to cuddle on the couch for a little while. Thankfully a banana and Baby Einstein "On the Farm" kept her still long enough to warm up.
