but that's not in the budget

Two summers ago, Darin was working at Lutherwood which meant late nights, long weekends, and a lonely wife stuck with horrible summer TV. So I signed myself up for netflix and enjoyed my summer of the chick flick. When fall arrived we cancelled the membership and went back to enjoying our hours of network television.

Last spring we made the big leap to a TV-free house and decided to help ease the transition that we'd sign up for netflix again. It definitely beats waiting in line at blockbuster or hollywood video, and the price can't be beat. I also love how the use of netflix has entered my everday vocabulary and assume those around me understand when discussing films and I say, "I've got it on my queue" or "I'll have to put that on my queue."

We have the simple two-disc membership and early on decided one disc would be devoted to a television series (currently we're on The West Wing, Season 2) as some times you're just interested in a short episode of something and not an entire movie. The other disc is the movie disc and while Darin has input, I'm pretty much in charge of keeping tabs on the queue and which movie will arrive in our mailbox next. It's a task I love.

And although there have been a couple duds (we'll blame them on "miscommunication") we've lucked out on some great movies recently. But did you know about movie music? Yeah, you watch a cool movie and suddenly you find yourself humming that one song and it's all you can do not to hop on i-tunes and hit "buy song", or worse yet, "buy album". These expenses aren't part of the netflix plan!

200pximreedfish First up was I'm Reed Fish which was a quirky little small-town comedy which totally reminded me of growing up on good ole Lopez. The story was sweet and engaging and the story-telling itself was a bit of a surprise. The soundtrack looks great, but I was especially intrigued by the singing of actress Schuyler Fisk. Turns out the two songs she performed in the film she actually co-wrote. Lucky for me, she doesn't have an album. Problem is, she's working on one right now darnit!

Next we heard all the buzz and orderd up Once. Have you seen it yet? You totally should!Once  Don't be intimidated by the "R" rating, for once I think the rating guys over-shot it. There is no sex (not even a kiss) and no violence and no "adult" story lines. There is a lot of the F-word, but probaly because these folks live in England and it's just a part of the vocab. The story is so touching and the music is incredible. People have been calling it a "modern musical" because the actors in the movie aren't actors at all. They're singer/songwriters who were hired to write the music and then do some acting in-between songs. I totally want to get the soundtrack and just devour the lyrics, they were so beautiful. Darin and I were both humming the oscar-winning song for days after watching.

Dan_in_real_life Then Friday we watched Dan In Real Life. Darin hadn't even heard of it, but I kept seeing it all over the blog-o-sphere and knew it had to be a winner. You know there's good music, when you catch yourself commenting on a lyric rather than a line. There was a band performing in the final scene, and Darin paused the credits so we could find out who it was. Truly talented guy. If you rent the DVD you have to watch the bonus feature on the music. I love the idea of the music in this movie acting as another character. This movie was really beautiful and I want to make sure you watch it soon if you haven't already.

I think I've got $2 left from a birthday i-tunes gift card. How in the world am I supposed to choose?

I'm dying to watch Enchanted, but I've heard there's some musical elements to thEnchanted_unofficialis one to.  I don't dare!

that's right JJ

Yesterday Daisy and I went to visit with my friend Sasha who is pretty much house-bound this month with her daughter (a colon cleaning out issue). Her 7-year-old son, JJ was playing with a kids laptop and I told him Daisy would love to bang on the keys since I won't let her with my laptop. So he fiddled with the game a little and got it configured so she could whack away and not affect anything. I thought that was so kind and Miss Daisy was sure happy to have a chance at the toy.

That is, until JJ's sister showed up on the scene and didn't think Daisy should be playing with the toy. "Hey," JJ said, making sure his sister didn't take it away. "She's been waiting practically her whole life to bang on the keys."

Yes, JJ, she has.

just prayin' it's not a train

Tulip

This morning, as Darin kissed me before getting out of bed, he whispered "You look beautiful in this light at the end of the tunnel."

It took me a minute to stop myself from falling back asleep and catch what he was saying. It may have been cheesy, but it meant everything.

That's why it's here. I want to remember.

We are getting closer...

TJ, our dog

We do love this bunny and we keep finding new reasons. We've been getting a huge kick out of the way that he scrounges for cheerios at the bottom of Daisy's exersaucer. I think he's a little more tolerant of her since the O's started coming his way.

For some reason, this post wouldn't upload last night. Weird typepad. So I'm trying again today.

Happy Spring!

I'm sitting here watching the snow fall outside my window. I'd give you a picture but that would mean that I'd have to get up and go outside. And since I'm here all cozy under the blanket, with my laptop working away, you'll just have to trust me.

Here's to spring in Bellingham!

So what do you do when you've had a rough day? Put on The Bachelor and window shop at Etsy, that's what! Last night it was all about baby stuff, next time it'll be for the mama!

This green beanie is too cute.

I could make these cute clippies, I've got that ribbon.

Hip baby shoes.

More cute clippies, yellow this time.

These button socks are so fun.

Love the Dad tatoo, and there's a Mom one too.

Need a baby shower gift? Here's a fun twist on the diaper cake trend.

Who wouldn't love a homemade stuffed penguin? Especially in this house!

More hair bows!

Big flower headband, plus cute daughter, equals adorable photo shoot.

We love our mini diaper bag, so nice for throwing in the stoller or car for a quick outing.

I never had a cute nursing cover, and the blanket thing was always a little awkward for me. Next time around, I'm definitely getting one of these.

And lastly, I just can't resist this sweet monkey.

Easter!

Did you have a nice Easter? We spent the morning at church and the afternoon with some friends eating yummy food. We topped off the celebration by purchasing a new toaster with a $10 off coupon! Not too exciting for Daisy's first Easter so I'm already thinking up things fo rnext year! I'm thinking maybe the Easter bunny will come to our house on the first day of spring so that we can spend Easter focusing on Jesus. Just a thought...

Here's a blurry pic we tried to take of our family on Easter:

Daisy updates

Darin's had the good Daisy updates on his blog this past week. When did this start happening?!

Here's the story of Daisy standing up. (We think she's just going to skip the crawling thing and go straight to walking. She will crawl a few steps just to get her to the place where she can stand on something! And if you watch the video, you'll also see her waving at the end which she has found to be a much more enjoyable activity as of late.)

And here's a great tale of the perils of the toybox.
