but that's not in the budget
Two summers ago, Darin was working at Lutherwood which meant late nights, long weekends, and a lonely wife stuck with horrible summer TV. So I signed myself up for netflix and enjoyed my summer of the chick flick. When fall arrived we cancelled the membership and went back to enjoying our hours of network television.
Last spring we made the big leap to a TV-free house and decided to help ease the transition that we'd sign up for netflix again. It definitely beats waiting in line at blockbuster or hollywood video, and the price can't be beat. I also love how the use of netflix has entered my everday vocabulary and assume those around me understand when discussing films and I say, "I've got it on my queue" or "I'll have to put that on my queue."
We have the simple two-disc membership and early on decided one disc would be devoted to a television series (currently we're on The West Wing, Season 2) as some times you're just interested in a short episode of something and not an entire movie. The other disc is the movie disc and while Darin has input, I'm pretty much in charge of keeping tabs on the queue and which movie will arrive in our mailbox next. It's a task I love.
And although there have been a couple duds (we'll blame them on "miscommunication") we've lucked out on some great movies recently. But did you know about movie music? Yeah, you watch a cool movie and suddenly you find yourself humming that one song and it's all you can do not to hop on i-tunes and hit "buy song", or worse yet, "buy album". These expenses aren't part of the netflix plan!
First up was I'm Reed Fish which was a quirky little small-town comedy which totally reminded me of growing up on good ole Lopez. The story was sweet and engaging and the story-telling itself was a bit of a surprise. The soundtrack looks great, but I was especially intrigued by the singing of actress Schuyler Fisk. Turns out the two songs she performed in the film she actually co-wrote. Lucky for me, she doesn't have an album. Problem is, she's working on one right now darnit!
Next we heard all the buzz and orderd up Once. Have you seen it yet? You totally should!
Don't be intimidated by the "R" rating, for once I think the rating guys over-shot it. There is no sex (not even a kiss) and no violence and no "adult" story lines. There is a lot of the F-word, but probaly because these folks live in England and it's just a part of the vocab. The story is so touching and the music is incredible. People have been calling it a "modern musical" because the actors in the movie aren't actors at all. They're singer/songwriters who were hired to write the music and then do some acting in-between songs. I totally want to get the soundtrack and just devour the lyrics, they were so beautiful. Darin and I were both humming the oscar-winning song for days after watching.
Then Friday we watched Dan In Real Life. Darin hadn't even heard of it, but I kept seeing it all over the blog-o-sphere and knew it had to be a winner. You know there's good music, when you catch yourself commenting on a lyric rather than a line. There was a band performing in the final scene, and Darin paused the credits so we could find out who it was. Truly talented guy. If you rent the DVD you have to watch the bonus feature on the music. I love the idea of the music in this movie acting as another character. This movie was really beautiful and I want to make sure you watch it soon if you haven't already.
I think I've got $2 left from a birthday i-tunes gift card. How in the world am I supposed to choose?
I'm dying to watch Enchanted, but I've heard there's some musical elements to th
is one to. I don't dare!
