Happy 16th Birthday to my sweet niece, Maya.
I was a freshman in high school when my nephew Jacob was born. It was pretty cool to be Aunt Deanna, but there was no way I was an "Auntie". The only Auntie I knew was my great-aunt Dorothy who was kind and sweet and a wonderful woman, but much older and had the mumus and grannie perfume to match her age.
So I asked my sister to call me Aunt Deanna around her kids and it was no problem for Jacob and later, his sister Molly.
But then Miss Maya came around. Miss Maya born with the head FULL of brown hair (pretty much the opposite of sweet baldy Molly) and the spunky personality to match.
Someone let it slip to her that I didn't love being called Auntie, so of course, that's what she was going to call me.
But because of my name and because of her age, instead of Auntie Deanna, it often came out Auntie Anna. Which was cute and adorable, and became my special Aunt name.
So instead of getting under my skin, she just made me smile and love her all the more. Take that kid!
